“Hot Rod,” a miniature prototype for the original Project Orion, a conceptual nuclear detonation pulse-driven spacecraft. Hot Rod was about 1m in diameter and used C4 charge pellets to generate the explosions that accelerated it. It reached an altitude of 105m with a steady rate of acceleration. This was in 1959.
